Why talking about it isn't always enough

Why talking about it isn't always enough

Sometimes you understand your pain perfectly and still can't shake it. That gap between knowing and feeling is where the real work begins.

You can explain exactly why you feel the way you do. You know the childhood moment, the pattern, the trigger. You've said it out loud a hundred times in therapy, to friends, to yourself at 2am. And yet the feeling stays.

This is one of the most frustrating experiences in emotional healing — and it's far more common than people realise.

Insight isn't the same as release

Traditional talk therapy is brilliant at building understanding. It helps you connect the dots, name what happened, and make sense of your story. For many people, that process is genuinely transformative.

But understanding lives in the thinking mind. And a lot of our stress doesn't. It's stored lower down — in the nervous system, in the body, in the tension you carry in your shoulders without noticing.

That's why you can intellectually "get it" and still feel your chest tighten every time the old memory surfaces.

The body keeps its own record

When something overwhelming happens, the mind makes meaning of it — but the body records the sensation. The racing heart, the held breath, the clenched jaw. These physical imprints don't automatically clear just because you've understood the cause.

This is where somatic approaches become important. Techniques like EFT — Emotional Freedom Techniques, often called tapping — work directly with the body's stress response rather than only with the story around it. Instead of talking your way toward calm, you signal safety to the nervous system itself.

When we go even deeper

Matrix Reimprinting takes this a step further. Rather than simply reducing the charge around a memory, it allows us to step back into it — gently, safely — and interact with the younger part of you that was there. Not to relive the pain, but to give that part of you what it needed and couldn't access at the time.

Clients often describe the result as finally being able to close a chapter they'd read many times but never finished.

You're not doing therapy wrong

If you've felt frustrated that "knowing better" hasn't been enough, please hear this: you are not broken, and you haven't failed at healing. You've simply been working at one level when the stress was living at another.

Understanding opens the door. The body walking through it is what completes the journey.

🌿 Something to try this week

The next time you feel a familiar emotional reaction, pause before reaching for an explanation. Instead, ask: where do I feel this in my body right now? Chest? Throat? Stomach? Simply naming the physical location — without analysis — begins to shift your relationship with it.
